The FTSE could be quite good value now!

by Znethru @ 2008-09-29 - 22:18:21

Depending on what has happened by the time I wake up tomorrow, I might go for a medium term "buy" of the FTSE index.

Considering it's just dropped 800 points in a week, at the very least it is better value than it was 7 days ago.

The big question is "where exactly is the bottom of this market?"

Of course nobody actually knows the answer to that one, but I think as far as a medium term "buy and hold" is concerned there could be some healthy profits to be made at current levels.

Are you a natural gambler? You're right that it must go up again at some point (even if it drops in the short-term) but it could be a long wait. Even the experts seem to be unsure how to play it right now. So, gamble if you dare!

Tom.

Is there such a thing as a natural gambler?

I am trying to 'read' the markets but this is proving to be amazingly difficult at this precise point in time!

The market is not readable because the prices on offer are not a reflection of either assets or potential returns. No-one has enough information - which is ironic because there is actually too much to digest - or the capacity to consider how the dynamic variables interact. It's a market which is driven by pure emotion. To guess the bottom, you'll have to predict the point when all the people selling stop being terrified of it dropping (because they have got out) and when others will know that and decide to buy.

You don't need to 'guess' or predict the exact bottom [of this current market] as long as you intend to hold medium- term and can stand to sit on a paper loss for a while if things go against you!

So, how much are you going to risk this morning?

If the "medium term" is long enough, you'll get a higher return in a savings account - unless that goes belly-up too.

You are assuming that there will be a rise. It could well stabilize to a flat line, like Japan in the 90s.

Z, you weren't the one who exacerbated the whole situation by short-selling were you? Tut tut indeed.
